MAAN7554 Working in developing countries 5 op

General description

The course covers a broad variety of both theoretical and practical concepts and issues that are relevant when working in developing countries. Also methods and modes of action generally used in development work and research in developing countries are discussed.

Learning outcomes

To know and understand common methods and practices used in development research as well as the special methodological considerations necessary in developing country situations. Also to facilitate students successful working in developing countries and development cooperation as well as in other cross-cultural situations.


Course includes two packages. P1 is a lecture course composed of domestic and visiting lecturers sharing their experiences of development work, usually with focus on cross-cultural issues. Also concepts like time and self in different cultures are discussed as well as different roles of a development worker in development projects. P2 is a book exam introducing methods and practices used in development research and in planning and implementing development projects. Emphasis is on participatory methods and approaches.

P1) Lectures and lecture diary (more information on first lecture), P2) Independent study of literature after the lecture course. Students will return one of their lecture diaries for evaluation in the book exam, please print and take all the lecture diaries to the book exam. The diary to be returned will be unfolded in the exam.

Notice: The new 5ECTS course includes old courses MAKE0314 Readings on Methodology and MAKE0404 Working in developing countries. Separate book exam is possible for those who have already done old “Working in Developing Countries” lecture course. This, however, should be done during the Fall 2014. The course is compulsory part of the module B. Please read the instructions above carefully!
