Basic knowledge of population genetic principles is assumed (e.g. equivalent of that taught in the course FYGE2121 Evolutionary biology)

Learning outcomes

The aim of the course is to familiarize students with genetic issues in conservation biology and the use of genetic markers and population genetic theory as a tool for conservation and management of populations.


Topics covered include: inbreeding depression, demography and extinction, metapopulations and fragmentation, units of conservation, hybridization, conservation breeding and restoration, invasive species, forensic and management applications of genetic identification.
