General description

The complexity of living organisms has hindered our ability to control, or reprogramme, them. In the last decade many advances in this field has been achieved allowing us for the first time to control cellular behaviour, all the way to multicellular organisms.

Learning outcomes

The aim of this course it to present some of the cutting-edge molecular biology techniques designed for cells to perform given tasks.
The course involves some practical trainings for students to get their hands "dirty" in Molecular Systems Biology.


Introduction to Molecular Biology and Systems Biology,cellular processes, networks, feedback and loops, protein-protein interactions,simple circuits, complex circuits, genetic engineering of controlled systems.
Different types of molecular interactions, inducible systems, external inducers, endogenous gene control, genetic repair (gene therapy),re-writing the genetic code
