Undergraduate course JO3 rakenteet ja toimijat organisaatiossa and JO4 Organisaatio ja toimintaympäristö give good basic skills for this advanced level course. Taking these courses is not, however, a prerequisite for taking part to this course for those students who have otherwise obtained competencies required studying advanced level courses in Management and Organization.

Learning outcomes

The main objective of the course is to provide the students with an up-to-date understanding on the theoretical approaches used in the analysis of organizations in their environments. As a part of this, the course shows how the conceptual knowledge in this field develops as a result of empirical research.
After accomplishing the course the student understands how individual organizations, organizational industries, sectors and fields evolve in the form of continuous mutual processes. The student is aware of main conceptual approaches to these issues and also recognizes how these approaches develop as a result of conceptual and empirical research. The conceptual understanding can be applied in the analysis of various external demands faced by individual organizations and industries and identification of adequate ways to respond to these demands.

Contents

The course covers several streams of research that have addressed the intersection between organizations and their environments. These streams include actor-driven, strategy and innovation-related and institutional approaches to organizations and organizational change. These streams differ both with respect to their basic presumptions on the inherent nature of organizations and whether they emphasize the organizations’ opportunities to influence their environments or necessity to accommodate to the conditions defined by them. This way the course also offers several conceptual lenses for those students who are in the opening stages of their Master's Theses and who are especially interested in the realm of organizations and their environments.

Teaching methods

Lectures 20 h 0 h

The course consists of lectures most of which have been allocated a research article introducing the subject in question. Students prepare notes of the articles and deliver them to the lecturer before each lecture. This supports dialogue on each subject matter at the lectures. The course also includes exercises that further elaborate the individual themes based on reports prepared in student groups. For the final exam students must read both the articles allocated for the lectures and several few pre-defined articles from the edited book. Some of these articles may not be directly addressed at the lectures. The amount of lectures is altogether 20 h.
