Learning outcomes

The course prepares students for critical and analytical thinking and trains them to question the concept of knowledge. After completing the course the students understand the nature, foundations and purpose of a scientific research process. They comprehend the stages of a scientific research process and are able to do justified choices for formulating a research strategy. The students are able to draft a research plan for the purposes of a Master's Thesis.


The course familiarizes students with the scientific theory building, the forms of scientific explanation, the accumulation of scientific knowledge, and the nature and stages of the scientific research process. The central themes of the course include selecting the research topic, formulating a research problem, structuring the research report, source criticism, trustworthiness, search and collection of data, conduct of conceptual research, philosophical foundations of research, theoretical framework, choice of research and analysis methods, conduct of analysis, and interpretation and reporting of results.

Teaching methods

Written exam, research plan for a Master's Thesis. The research plan should be handed in before taking the exam.
