Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student is expected to be able to: (i) Explain and distinguish alternative theories of exchange rate determination and compare stability of exchange rate regimes, (ii) Analyse macroeconomic changes within open economy models and (iii) Critically analyse roles of international institutions in stabilizing economies.


The course builds on the course International Economics. It provides deeper understanding of financial side in open economy. Tackles a problem of financial instability, credit boom-bust cycles, the role of key international institutions. The course includes analysis of the multiple roles of the central bank as monetary policymaker, a lender of last resort, and regulator. It involves analysing problems of dynamic inconsistency and its solutions, credibility and reputation of central banks now and in the past.
