Learning outcomes

Organizational behavior refers to appreciating how individuals and groups behave and operate in collective, organizational settings. Successful and high-performing organizations stand out with respect to the quality of their management and organizational practices. They are able to tap into the human side of the organization. Appreciating organizational behavior is thus central to managing organizations. Yet, as an academic field of study, organizational behavior is broad and multidisciplinary. To the practicing manager, the mastery of this field requires a reflexive approach, life-long learning coupled with wit and emotional maturity. The main objective of the course is to provide participants with a critical appreciation of the field of organizational behavior as it applies to the context of the 21st century organization. The learning outcomes of the course are:
1. A systematic, yet critical understanding of the philosophies, theories, approaches and thinkers in organizational behavior.
2. The ability to reflect independently and critically on the subject matter, be it in oral or written forms.
3. The development of the leader within by exploring the personal domains of leadership, motivation and change.
4. An appreciation of the means of engaging others amidst change and developing thriving teams, organizations and societies.
5. Ability to think, judge and act maturely in contemporary organizations.

Contents

This course invites you to an intellectual, interactive and reflexive journey to explore this practically and academically meaningful field of study and practice. The course focuses on themes that are relevant in the contemporary, increasingly competitive landscape characterized by unpredictability, continuous change, increasing speed and global reach. The course focuses on the following four main themes via readings, exercises, weekly reflections, a final essay and ongoing class discussion:
- The dynamics of motivation and personal engagement,
- The management of change and changing workplaces,
- Enabling bottom-up emergent change.
- Leadership and personal development
