General description

The course will be held next during the academic year 2017-2018.

Learning outcomes

The main aim of the course is to get doctoral students to accustomed to the process of writing a scientific article manuscript. During the course the student will write one scientific article manuscript, which will be sent for peer evaluation to both a scientific journal and an academic scientific conference. After completing the course, the student will have the skills and knowledge required to begin the process of writing for international scientific journals. Also, s/he will become familiar with the publication standards of different scientific journals, and will know the criteria for a good scientific article manuscript.

Contents

During the course, the student will write a scientific article, either independently or as part of a team (first author), and will submit it to the review process both for one of the central scientific conferences and for one peer-reviewed academic journal. The course will get the student acquainted with practices of writing academic, peer-reviewed article manuscripts. During the seminars, the student will also participate in developing the article manuscripts of the other course participants.

Teaching methods

Course requirements: It is recommended that a doctoral student attend the course when s/he has a suitable topic for writing an academic article manuscript. Also, if the planned article is an empirical study, relevant empirical data should already have been collected. The student can also write a literature review, as the literature review format is often well suited as the first article of the planned dissertation.

Modes of study

Attending lectures and seminars (periods 1 and 2). Versions of the article manuscript will be returned and evaluated during the course. The student will also keep a reading diary, where s/he will make notes on the articles that have been published in the target journal, and on the previous discussions of the topic of research. These notes will help the student to learn the practices, conventions and writing style of the target scientific journal.

In order to complete the course, the student will need to write one scientific manuscript and submit it to the review process for both one of the central conferences and one of the international peer-reviewed scientific journals (min. JUFO 1 ranking).

Evaluation

Pass/fail.

Study materials

Supplementary course literature will be found on the course's Moodle webpage after the beginning of the course.
