Students should have a basic knowledge either of a domestic intellectual property law system or of the international intellectual property law regime

Learning outcomes

To teach students with grounding in European intellectual property law about the many differences that exist in the United States system, including differences not only in the laws themselves, but also in the basic policies underlying those laws.


1. Overview of the United States Intellectual Property system: Theories, principles, and constitutional constraints
2. Patent Law (including the fundamental revision of the patent system to take effect in spring 2013)
3. Trademark and Unfair Competition
4. Copyright Law
5. Design protection
6. State-law intellectual property alternatives: trade secrets, right of publicity, and general misappropriation

TIME: Spring Term
The course is limited to 50 students. Students enrolled in the Master's Degree Programme in Law and Information Society (LIS) have priority in the selections. After this, the following criteria will be used to select the participants:
1. Exchange students of the TLS cooperative institutions
2. Degree students of the TLS cooperative institutions
3. Other law students
The course is optional but recommended for students in the LIS Programme.
