Learning outcomes

By the end of the course students should be able to:
- produce effective basic business correspondence
- participate in business related discussions using the appropriate language
- prepare and deliver an effective presentation for business purposes
- adopt and activate vocabulary from English texts related to their field of study
ENe1a (Lindholm): The distance learning alternative to En1a has the same objectives as the regular course.

EN1a is a foundation course for international business communication. It aims to increase the students’ awareness of their language learning by drawing attention to various metaskills required in business communication. The key concepts are establishing credibility, building trust and increasing learner autonomy. We also consider strategies to improve accurate and active use of language in business contexts. In addition, the course facilitates identifying challenges related to cross-cultural communication. The writing practice includes texts such as emails, enquiries and quotations. The oral practice consists of speaking in business situations, and giving a presentation. The topic areas include marketing, company organisation and company profiles.
ENe1a: The content is the same as in the course EN1a.

Groups 1-5 I-II: Surnames A-L (ENe1a Group 6 I-II: Surnames A-Ö),
Groups 7-11 III-IV: Surnames M-Ö (ENe1a Group 12 III-IV: Surnames A-Ö)

ENe1a: Independent work and group work 81 h.
In this distance learning alternative there are no scheduled classes. Instead, students practice theme areas and complete threshold tasks individually and in groups in order to qualify for key graded tasks. Once the course starts, it is strongly recommended that you attend the info session, the date and place of which will be announced later.

Students wanting to take the distance class must commit to check their email and the moodle area regularly and be prepared to arrange semi-regular meetings with their assigned group in order to pass through the threshold tasks. Furthermore, independent work requires a strong work ethic, initiative and a willingness to be flexible with your schedule. Despite not meeting in class, this course includes a high degree of interaction, both with the teacher and your fellow students.
