Learning outcomes

This course enables the students to understand and critically evaluate how and why history and memory are used, debated and contested in both academic research and society in general. They learn how to participate in discussions that deal with different interpretations of history, limitations of historical objectivity and claims of historical truth. They will also improve their skills of focused, problem-oriented learning and reading work in a group.

During this course, some of the key developments of 20th century history of the Baltic Sea region from both regional and national perspectives will be discussed. With the help of theoretical and conceptual tools, our understanding about the public and ideological uses of history, collective remembering, commemoration and silencing, and the politics of memory and memory conflicts will be discussed. From these premises, the course discusses how states, societies and selected other actors in history have striven to come to terms with their past, how they have debated it and how they continue to do so today around the Baltic Sea region.
