Learning outcomes

Starting with the presentation of their research plans, students will develop and elaborate the focus of their Master’s thesis. They will learn the academic discussion culture by presenting their own papers, receiving feedback and discussing papers presented by other students. Between the seminar meetings (approximately once in every three weeks) they will carry out independent research work so that at the end of the 4th semester they are ready to submit the final draft version of their Master's thesis.

At the beginning of the course students will present research plans for their Master’s thesis. After receiving feedback from the supervisors they will then present a corrected and updated version of this plan. Third paper to be presented is a literature review, where the student introduces and discusses the most important thematic, theoretical and methodological scholarly publications in the field of her/his subject area. Finally the students will present a chapter of their own choosing from their thesis. In addition to paper presentations the thesis seminar also functions as a common discussion and support forum for general thesis-related challenges, e.g. scheduling of the work, fine-tuning the focus and research questions, staying motivated, problem-solving strategies etc.
