General description

This course is only for DI students. The course is a classroom course but operates via Moodle, so most work is done online.

Technical Writing is part of a 4-credit package "Technical English" together with Oral Skills.

Learning outcomes

After the course the students should:
- be able to write a clear, well-structured technical report or article
- should understand the key elements involved in technical writing and academic articles
- be able to recognize and produce writing suitable for a variety of technical environments and audiences
- be aware of the principles of electronic writing

Contents

Topics covered on the course are:
- technical style
- technical descriptions
- effect of culture on writing
- layout, design and format of technical texts i.e. reports, articles
- electronic writing, eye scanning and usability
- writing tasks including web page design, technical instructions, CVs, reports
- clarity, accuracy and conciseness
- technical report as 'final' work on the course
