Learning outcomes

The student knows of the most important fermentation techniques, the requirements of the microbe cultures performed in various volumes as well as the techniques used for the down-stream processing of fermentation products. The student is also aware of the applications of the fermentation and down-stream techniques in the process industry.

Contents

The course will cover topics such as the methodology of fermentation, growth kinetics of microbes in different culture conditions, isolation of industrially important microbial strains and methods to improve the stains further, sterilization processes, design and use of fermentors, as well as the significance of aeration. In addition, the content includes the industrial techniques applied for processing of the fermentation product, such as various cell separation methods.
