Learning outcomes

The students will learn basic principles and methods of magnetic resonance: Electron Spin Resonance (ESR), Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).

Contents

Magnetic moments of electrons and nuclei. Paramagnetic properties of matter. Interaction of magnetic moments with r.f. field. Phenomenon of magnetic resonance. Bloch equations and their solutions. Spin-lattice and spin-spin relaxation. Homogeneous and inhomogeneous broadening of resonance lines, typical sources of broadening and shifts of the lines. Spin-hamiltonian. Simplest case of atomic hydrogen: energy levels and wavefunctions, allowed ESR and NMR transitions. Double resonance ENDOR. Chemical shift. Pulsed magnetic resonance and spin-echo. Modern ESR and NMR spectrometers. Principles and methods of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
