The course builds an understanding of the undercurrents behind the recent changes in Japanese society by studying the ethos and practices of post-war economic growth, the long recession as well as the reforms, restructuring, and new openness of the past few years. Topics include: democracy and media, the construction state and environmental problems, development of civil society, changes in labor and the welfare state, and popular culture.
