Learning outcomes

Upon the completion of the course, students will know the major historical and contemporary Western scientific and popular debates concerning the East Asian region.

Contents

What has East Asia meant for Western people and how have they understood it in history? The course analyses how and why the West has been interested in East Asia throughout history and how this has influenced different scientific and popular conceptualizations of the region and its societies, peoples, polities and economies. Further, how have the East Asians responded to Western discourses on them and their societies? The course will go through pre-modern conceptions on the Orient, Sinocentrism, colonialism, Civilization, the “Yellow Peril”, Pan-Asianism, totalitarianism, the Domino Theory, East Asian Development Models, the “Asian Values” debate and the Japan and China rising debates.
