KIFF5005 Language and Culture Tandem, Finnish 2 ECTS
Organised by
Centre for Lang.and Com./Finnish as a Foreign Lang
Person in charge
Päivi Paukku, Jenni Laine

General description

The Language Tandem is a pair or a small group programme in which students work with a native speaker of the target language, to improve their language skills, confidence, and to explore the culture of the language. One of the two target languages is always Finnish. The tandem pairs/groups meet weekly and speak both languages equally. During the course they each keep a learning diary or blog, and at the end of the course they report to the teacher in charge of the course for their pair. The Language Tandem is intended to complement other language studies, but it cannot be included in the obligatory language and communication studies.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, students will:
- be able to communicate in different everyday situations
- have a wide vocabulary on the topics discussed
- be able to understand the significance of intercultural communication
- have developed both independent language learning skills as well as group work skills
- have reflected on their learning strategies

Contents

During the Language Tandem, the pairs/groups can practice a variety of skills, including pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar and discussion skills. To practice these skills, the participants choose topics that interest them, for example, current affairs, studying, society, or cultural differences. The participants will determine the more detailed content together at the start of the Tandem, and send their plan to the teacher in charge of their pair.
