Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: A1

General description

The aim of the course is to offer students a basic knowledge of the Finnish language in order to help them cope with various everyday situations and to give them a solid start with grammar. During the lessons, basic grammar will be taught and various tasks will be practised both in pairs and as group work. Pronunciation exercises, listening comprehension exercises, communication exercises and a small number of writing tasks will be included. In addition to attending the lessons, there will be homework throughout the course.

Learning outcomes

After the course the student should be able to communicate in simple and routine situations requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar topics and activities. He/she should be able to understand phrases and frequent vocabulary related to areas of most immediate personal relevance, when people speak slowly and clearly. The student should be able to write short and simple messages and read short, simple texts. He/she should be able to e.g., find specific, predictable information in simple everyday material.


Themes: greetings, introducing oneself, countries, languages and nationalities, the seasons and weather, months and days of the week, numbers, expressing time, colours and other adjectives, family and relatives, food and eating, shopping: buying and paying.

Structures: vowel harmony, some common noun types, the genitive form and consonant gradation, possessive structure, the verb types and conjugation in the present tense, asking questions and responding to them, partitive singular, the local cases.

Staff members may be admitted if there are places available, but they should primarily participate in the courses arranged by the university personnel training unit.
