General description

The course concentrates on developing vocabulary and communication skills. During the course, the skills needed to participate in working life are practised, such as work-related vocabulary, job application and selection interview. At the same time, the communication, interaction, team and presentation skills needed in the workplace are also developed.

Learning outcomes

After the course the student should be able to understand the main points of clear standard speech on familiar matters. He/she should be able to understand texts that consist mainly of high frequency everyday or job-related language. The student should be able to describe, e.g., experiences and events and he/she can briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans as well. The student should be able to write simple connected texts on the below mentioned topics.

Contents

The course will cover reading, listening, writing and speaking, e.g., the following: studies at university, work in different fields, Finnish culture and society. Newspaper articles on current topics will also be read. Features of spoken language are dealt with. The students will have to give short presentations of their own choice OR participate in an oral test. There will be a written test at the end of the course.
