General description

This course is an introduction to the fundamental concepts of Intercultural Communication (ICC), a 21st-century skill that helps students learn from and work with people from other cultures in different contexts. This course is centred on discussions of topics from ICC literature and will draw from students' own experiences in Finland and abroad.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, students should:
- be able to understand the complexity of culture and its influence on language, communication, and interpersonal relationships;
- be able to use special vocabulary related to the field of ICC;
- be able to discuss major themes of research in the field of ICC;
- be able to relate the issues presented in the course to their own life experiences;
- be able to lead a short discussion on an ICC topic; and
- (for extra credit) be able to write about a topic related to an ICC context.


- reading short texts and handouts about the main themes in ICC literature
- discussing topics such as cultural values, identities, histories, cultural transition, and conflict
- preparing for and leading a short discussion on an ICC topic

For extra credit (1 op, for a total course credit of 3 op), students can write a 3-page essay on an ICC topic as it relates to their own individual experience/field of study.

Evaluation and evaluation criteria

Attendance rate of 80% including the first lesson; active participation in class; oral presentation; outside reading and tasks (materials on Moodle).
