General description

This course is designed for doctoral level students to help them prepare to present their research at conferences and in other contexts.
NB! This course is not offered to medical faculty students because they have a course of their own: KIEN3341 English Oral Presentation Skills

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course students should:
- be able to give a presentation on a topic related to their research in a style appropriate for an academic conference;
- be aware of different presentation formats such as roundtable, poster, and research presentations;
- understand the structure of presentations;
- be able to use signposting in order to improve a presentation's flow, clarity, and comprehensibility for the audience;
- be able to maximize the impact of visual aids and use them effectively;
- be aware of body language in presentation situations;
- be able to use clear and comprehensible language in presentations;
- be aware of the differences between presenting in a video conference vs. a face-to-face environment;
- be aware of the advantages and disadvantages of digital tools for presenting such as PowerPoint and Prezi; and
- be able to evaluate peer presentations based on the elements of an effective presentation.
