General description

This course is only for DI students. This course focuses on the oral skills needed in technical situations and the workplace.

Oral Skills is part of a 4-credit package "Technical English" together with KIEN2367Technical Writing.

Learning outcomes

After the course the student should:
- have more confidence speaking in English in both technically-related and social situations;
- be able to present work related to studies (in presentations, diagrams) in different environments and formats to express thoughts and findings;
- have better developed presentation skills;
- have a greater awareness of intercultural issues as they relate to the workplace;
- be aware of their team-work profile;
- be aware of appropriate and effective formats for communicating about self in recruitment processes e.g. video C.V.s;
- be aware of the stages and principles of consensus building.


Topics covered on the course are:
- socializing;
- giving instructions;
- latest developments in computers;
- cross culture;
- non-verbal communication and micro-skills;
- active listening;
- presentations: presenting to non-, semi- and technical audiences;
- negotiation skills;
- career skills;
- team building and collaboration skills;
- problem solving in collaborative teams.
