General description

Presentation skills course designed for doctoral level students from the faculty of medicine only and, if there is room, from the natural sciences.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student should:
- be able to competently give a conference presentation on a topic related to their own research.
- have a greater level of knowledge of the structure of presentations.
- understand the importance of visual aids and be able to use them effectively.
- be aware of different electronic modes of presentation delivery in addition to PowerPoint.
- be more aware of their body language in presentation situations.
- be aware of technology enhanced research methods.
- be able to use language effectively.


Students make a variety of different presentations aimed at a scientific audience. The first two sessions considers what makes a good presentation, the use of visuals, body language, and effective use of language. In the second part of the course, students give three major presentations to different audience 'levels': a '3MT' - three minute thesis presentation, non-specialist colleague and expert. They then get feedback from their peers and teacher. One or more of the presentations is filmed and participants receive a digital copy.
