General description

This course is an optional course intended to improve students' competence and confidence in using legal English and prepare them for legal work in English. It is intended as a preparation for the ILEC exam (International Legal English Certificate examination developed by Cambridge ESOL and TransLegal) but can be taken by any student willing to practise their language skills in the legal contexts regardless of their intention whether or not to take the ILEC exam. Targeted level of language proficiency: B2-C1.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course the students should:
- be able to write common legal text types in English
- be able to engage effectively in a range of speaking situations typical of legal practice
- be able to read and analyse a variety of legal texts
- be familiar with the format of the ILEC exam and the typical tasks that can be encountered
- be able to use the acquired skills, knowledge and strategies in order to solve typical tasks of the ILEC exam

- analysis and production of authentic legal texts
- language functions typical of legal discourse
- language practice in all four skill areas: reading and writing, speaking and listening

TIME: spring semester 2018 (this course will be offered only during the academic year 2017-2018).

The course is optional and open to all current students of the Faculty of Law (including exchange students and students in the LIS Programme). Course entry is limited to 25 students. Participants will be selected in the order of enrolment.
The course cannot be used to substitute obligatory studies in English (i.e. Legal English: Modules 1-4).
