General description

This integrated skills course is intended for Biomedicine students to help them in their academic studies. Students develop their abilities in reading, writing, listening and speaking in addition to the special discourse and terminology of their field. Emphasis is placed on active student participation.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course students should:
- have a deeper knowledge of the terminology used in medical texts;
- be able to recognize and understand the most commonly used terms;
- be able to deconstruct medical terms and combine them to form meaning;
- have a better knowledge of strategies used to read medical texts;
- be able to analyse biomedical articles and summarise the main ideas orally and in writing;
- be more aware of style and conventions in scientific writing;
- be able to take notes from books and lectures;
- be able to craft a scientific presentation to expert and non-expert audiences.

Contents

- reading authentic academic texts related to Biomedicine taken from journals and textbooks;
- developing strategies to enable effective reading of authentic texts;
- consolidating academic vocabulary based on the discourse of biomedicine:
- listening to lectures delivered by experienced researchers and taking notes;
- practising strategies for active listening - intensively and extensively;
- becoming aware of biomedicine writing conventions leading to a short written assignment;
- participating in small study-group discussions, and giving short presentations.

For credit, students must attend the contact lessons; participate actively and complete course tasks for the final portfolio.
Exemption (AHOT): Students applying for exemption from the course should submit a written portfolio including:
- a letter of self-assessment which also justifies the grounds for exemption;
- a sample of a short academic writing assignment in English related to subject of study and using appropriate referencing;
- a summary of an article from the field of study (enclose article).
Students who present an appropriate portfolio, will be invited for an interview.

Evaluation and evaluation criteria

Pass/fail.
