Learning outcomes

After completing the course the student will have an overall view of charged particle dynamics in electromagnetic fields, behaviour of plasma as a fluid and basic elements of kinetic theory. The student will be able to solve simple problems in single-particle motion, magnetised fluid systems in equilibrium and wave propagation in plasmas. The student will be ready to apply the knowledge in plasma-physics problems of space physics and astrophysics.

Contents

Basic Electrodynamics; Defining properties of plasma; Single particle motion; Kinetic plasma description; macroscopic equations; Magnetohydrodynamics; Cold plasma waves; Warm plasma.
