General description

The course introduces some central computational methods used in physics. During the course we practice the implementation of these techniques using the Python programming language. The course presents classical methods applicable from the scale of atoms to galaxies. Quantum mechanical methods are not covered, however.

Learning outcomes

After the course, a student is able to
-describe some of the most important physical simulation methods and their scope of applicability
-implement simple computational algorithms on a computer
-implement and explain the theoretical basis of one method of choise


Classical simulation methods:
-numerical computing and optimization
-statistical models and Monte Carlo methods
-particle models and molecular dynamics
-continuum models and the finite element method
