Learning outcomes

After completing the course the students be able to:
(1) Plan and carry-out observations with a professional telescope;
(2) Run the commonly used astronomical data reduction and analysis software to produce fully reduced calibrated data of the most common observing modes;
(3) Analyze the data and report the results in the context of the relevant astrophysical science question;
(4) Produce a written report


The course is organized by Tuorla Observatory in cooperation with the Finnish Centre for Astronomy with ESO (FINCA) as a 5-day intensive course held at Tuorla Observatory of the University of Turku and is offered for students from University of Turku, Helsinki and Oulu as well Aalto University. The course consists of lectures in the afternoon and practical night-time work for a maximum of 20 students using the Nordic Optical Telescope (NOT) remotely. The lectures cover observational techniques, preparation of observations and the common methods used for reducing and calibrating optical and near-infrared imaging and spectroscopic data and polarimetric observations. Suitable astrophysical examples are used to illustrate the value of the different observing modes. The practical sessions include the preparations, and taking the observations using the currently available instrumentation (ALFOSC, NOTCAM, FIES) of the NOT as well as starting the data reductions and analysis. The students are divided into five groups of four students, and each group has access to the telescope for two half night runs using two different instruments. The data reductions and analysis, and writing-up of the course reports will be carried-out individually.
