The knowledge of Fourier transforms and basics of emission mechanisms are obligatory prerequisites.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course the student will have basic knowledge of radio astronomy and interferometric imaging. The student will have the ability to propose observations, observe, and reduce single dish and interferometric radio data, and understand the technical limitations. The student will know the main radio sources on the sky and understand how their emission is created and how they can be best observed.


Basics of radio astronomy, methods of analysis, and research at wavelengths ranging from sub-millimeter to kilometer waves: quasars, pulsars, transients, molecular clouds, solar eruptions. Main current and future radio instrumentation: ALMA, LOFAR, SKA, radioheliographs, other space-based and ground-based instruments. Theory and practice of interferometric imaging, both astronomical and solar. The course contains exercises and data analysis tasks.
