General description

Knowledge and innovations have important roles in geography and knowledge economy. Knowledge is created in all sectors of society, for instance, in academia, art, politics and business. The aim is to develop even better research methods, pieces of art, political decisions and commercial products. Some knowledge creation processes lead into innovations - for example, completely new or substantially improved products or services.

Learning outcomes

Student masters the main features of international knowledge creation and innovation processes, as well as challenges related to these processes. The student is capable of analyzing processes with the concepts of time and space in different geographical contexts such as peripheries and centers.

Contents

Course concerns geographies of knowledge creation processes and innovations through theory and empirical examples. The meaning of knowledge and innovations is considered in geography, especially economic geography, and in current international society. Concepts of space and time are applied as a theoretical lens to the topic. Empirical examples include research about internationally mobile experts in varying fields who work in and move between peripheral and central locations.
