Learning outcomes

Students will obtain skills in using geospatial technologies and spatial information in research of landscape values and benefits and applying such knowledge in participatory landscape and land use planning (Public Participation GIS, Participatory GIS). The aim of the course is to learn how spatial approaches combined into participation of stakeholders strengthens argumentation of values, rights and governance related to land and resources, and how such knowledge supports the processes of democratic planning and resource management.


Students will use geospatial data, GIS and web mapping technologies and practice how to collect, analyse and present PGIS information as maps and through other visual and statistical means. Students will get acquainted with different modes of planning through different case studies both in Finland and abroad.

Lectures, reading material, group work discussion, independent work, web assisted work, practical assignments and reporting.
