Learning outcomes

Students will learn the basic structure of aquatic ecosystems and recognize the main biotic actors and abiotic regulating factors as well as understand the interactions among these. Students are able to reflect this knowledge to both the ecological theory and applied challenges in management and conservation of aquatic ecosystems.


Lectures deal with physio-chemical characteristics, and structure and function of aquatic communities, and ecology of both the fresh and saline waters, with the Baltic Sea as the principle example. Course will deal with threats and challenges to aquatic ecosystems and introduce student to both the basic and applied aquatic research in the form of student presentations and excursions.
