Learning outcomes

The participants will be familiar with the characteristics of the flora and fauna of the subarctic mountain birch zone, their ecology and differences in relation to the coast of the Arctic Ocean. They understand the role interaction of biotic, such as grazing by reindeer and outbreaks of geometrids, and abiotic factors, e.g. climatic change, in shaping the subarctic ecosystems.

Contents

The course consists of lectures, field excursions, field and laboratory exercises and a seminar reporting the results of student exercises. The course will be held at the Kevo research station in Utsjoki, Finnish Lapland, an in the surrounding areas. The students learn about the subarctic biology and the current research on it - especially in the central study fields of Kevo research station.
