General description

This integrated skills course is intended for Education students in Rauma to help them in their academic studies and future working life. Students develop their abilities in reading, writing, listening and speaking in addition to the special discourse and terminology of their fields. Emphasis is placed on active student participation.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course students should:
- be able to analyse an English academic text and summarize the main ideas orally and in writing;
- be more aware of style and appropriacy in writing;
- be able to take notes from books and lectures;
- be able to write an academic paper
- be able to give a presentation in English
- be able to communicate effectively orally in working life situations such as meetings and interviews
- be able to communicate effectively in writing in working life situations


- reading authentic academic texts related to Education taken from journals and textbooks;
- developing strategies to enable effective reading of authentic texts;
- consolidating academic vocabulary based on the Academic Word List (AWL);
- listening to lectures delivered by experienced researchers and taking notes;
- practising strategies for active listening - intensively and extensively;
- becoming aware of Anglo-American writing conventions;
- participating in small study group discussions;
- writing an academic paper using appropriate style and referencing
- giving an oral presentation on a topic related to the field of study
- practising meetings and interviews
- writing for working life such as letters, e-mails and CV
