Learning outcomes

This course provides an understanding of the distinctive nature of the management of human resources in international contexts. The course deepens the students' knowledge on topical areas in international human resource management (IHRM), as well as relevant research settings and dominant theoretical perspectives of IHRM. After completing the course the students are able to understand complexities, opportunities and challenges pertaining to international HRM. The students are also able to define and illustrate the key components of IHRM, to explain the impact of national and cultural factors on the IHRM practices, to understand the strategic and functional roles of IHRM, and to recognize the external forces (e.g. political and economic changes) that have the potential to shape IHRM. In addition, the students learn to diagnose international HRM issues critically and analytically.

Contents

This course provides a research-based understanding of the major issues in IHRM through selected literature. Students learn the policies and practices of IHRM as utilized by multinational enterprises (MNE). Specific topics include strategic HRM issues, work and labor regulation, issues related to host, home and third country nationals, knowledge management, development, resourcing, performance management, compensation, expatriation and repatriation. The course also considers how IHRM appears to be developing and changing in relation to issues of social responsibility and sustainability.
