Learning outcomes

The aim of this course is to give a comprehensive introduction to the diversity and complexity of contemporary Japanese society and culture.


Themes treated in the course include gender and equality, minorities, nationalism, social movements and popular culture. These are put in historical and comparative perspective while the Japanese self-understanding is discussed.

The lecture course and the final exam will count for 2 credits. The other part of the course is a 2-credit electronic exam on literature. The book for the exam: Jeff Kingston, Contemporary Japan: History, Politics, and Social Change since the 1980s. The literature exam is mandatory for those who wish to complete the Minor in East Asian studies.

Lectures (12h), readings and exam 2 cr. Separate literature exam 2 cr (see instructions below). To prepare for lectures and discussions, it is recommended to read the essential readings provided for each lecture. Suggested readings can be used to study independently the topic in question.
