Learning outcomes

After the course, the student will be able to:
- apply a given method for creating a strategic security plan for an organisation
- apply a given method for creating a continuity plan for a critical information system
- evaluate an information security policy
- distinguish the critical interorganisational IT relationship points where information security or IT service continuity should be considered, and choose appropriate methods for managing security and continuity


The security of information systems is vital in current business environment. Critical information must be kept securely in the organization and organizational information systems have to be continuously operating, in order to survive in the competitive environment. The student will learn the basics of information security management of an organization, how organizations manage and plan for IT service continuity etc. Students will also learn to solve and discuss practical security and continuity related problems in case discussion sessions, where both real and fictional cases are used.

Teaching methods

Option 1: Lectures 14 h, Exercises 10-12 h. Passing the course requires active participation on lectures and case discussion sessions and writing an essay in a group. Lecture assignments and case assignments are graded weekly. Case discussions will be graded on the basis of preparation and discussion activity. Students will also write an essay in groups on a course related topic and report it by given deadlines on course wiki. The student has to get 50 % of the points in order to pass the course.
Option 2: If the student has extensive experience in information security management, an option of writing a 10-15 page essay based on scientific literature and practice is available. Further information from the responsible teacher.
