Learning outcomes

Regardless of globalization and digitalization economic activity is dependent on the opportunities provided by specific regional environments. The students will understand key economic, socio-cultural, and technological trends and their influence on the location of firms and industries, as well as regional economic development. They will understand key concepts and methods in economic geography, and their significance in decision-making in firms, cities, or e.g. regional development organizations.


The course will introduce key concepts and theories in economic geography. They help understand why different types of firms operate in different locations, how consumers behave in space, and how regions develop as a consequence of economic activities.

The course is organised for the first time in the academic year 2016-2017. It will be given in English. In 2017-2018 the course will be given in Finnish, TM1 Yritys- ja markkinointimaantiede.
