Learning outcomes

The student will come to terms with cultural planning as participatory and cross-sectoral form of urban planning, based on a wide understanding of culture. The student will be able to crically assess forms and definitions of regional and local culture and understands the principles of cultural mapping as a form of interactive wide-range information gathering. The student will acquire hand-on experience from project work dealing with multilateral collaborative planning.


This studymodule od advanced special studies will cover the international currents of urban cultural development and their linkage with participatory planning. Regional and local culture are discussed from both institutional (fine arts and heritage) and way-of-life perspectives. Particular attention will be paid to the identifying of local cultural resources and their connections with the identities of communities as well as the vibrancy of places. Cultural development will be concretised in the form of case studies drom the Satakunta region frim the viewpoints of cultural policy, creative industries, social justice and cultural tourism in co-operation with local actors.
