Intermediate physical chemistry I and II (Fysikaalinen kemia I ja II), recommended Mathematics and Physics for chemists, recommended

Learning outcomes

The student knows the basic theories of chemical bonding and understands how many common chemical concepts are related to them. The student understands the physical background of the optical and electric properties of molecules, and how molecular interactions relate to molecular properties and the behaviour of materials. The student understands the statistical basis of thermodynamics and kinetic theory of gases, and can apply statistical models to simple problems in chemistry, and can apply the knowledge to phase transitions.

Contents

Chemical bonding, optical properties of molecules, classical and quantum statistical distributions, partition functions and their relation to thermodynamic functions, applications of statistical thermodynamics in chemistry, kinetic theory of gases, electric properties of molecules, molecular interactions, phases and phase transitions.
