Learning outcomes

The student becomes introduced to the basic theory and concepts behind molecular spectroscopy, from the physical chemistry point of view. The student understands the quantum chemical description of the various types of molecular energy (rotation, vibration, and so on), its quantization into energy levels, molecular transitions between energy levels induced by electromagnetic radiation, and how the transitions gives rise to the familiar molecular-spectroscopic methods (IR, magnetic resonance, and so on). After the course, the student is also familiar with the central concepts of molecular spectroscopy such as the Fourier transform, molecular energy levels, selection rules for transitions, the appearance of the different types of spectra and how their spectral parameters are related to the molecular structure and properties.


Review of the relevant quantum mechanics. Fourier series and Fourier transform (FT). Electromagnetic (EM) radiation. Separation of molecular energy into various types (electronic, vibrational, etc.), and their quantization (energy levels). The interaction between molecules and EM radiation; spectroscopic transitions and selection rules for transitions. Rotational (microwave), vibrational (infrared), and magnetic resonance (NMR, EPR) spectroscopy. FT-spectroscopic techniques.
