General description

The course is intended to provide an introduction to different chemical and physiochemical techniques for characterization of nano structures and ordered material of functional organic, inorganic, composite and hybrid materials.

Contents

Introduction to soft materials, macromolecules, polymers, 2D materials, biological membranes, micells, thin films, self-assembled monolayers. Determination of size & shape, mean molar masses, laser light scattering. Sedimentation, viscosity, contact angle. Determination of mechanical, electrical, optical, thermal and magnetic properties of solids.
Characterization techniques for surfaces and thin films (surface –IR, ATR-FTIR), surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy, SERS, ellipsometry). Techniques for determining the size of nanoparticles and macromolecules (light scattering, mass spectrometry (MALDI), and viscosity measurements). Characterization techniques for thermal stability and thermally induced changes (thermogravimetry, DTA, DSC and other methods).

Course is aimed at 4th and 5th year students and for PhD- students.
