Learning outcomes

The aim of the course is to provide a profound basis on the high throughput screening techniques in drug discovery and analytical measurement techniques available for (bio)chemical analysis. Students acquire knowledge in modern drug discovery and analytical measurement techniques to be applied for (bio)chemical research and practical (bio)chemical analysis.

Contents

Modern high throughput screening techniques in drug discovery are presented followed by a lab work for a typical HTS assay setup (also part of the Principles of Drug Discovery and Development course). Lectures on the analytical measurement techniques comprise rationales on the measurement signal improvement, methods for atomic absorption, fluorescence and emission spectroscopy and methods for molecular spectroscopy such as luminescence, Raman and mass spectroscopy.

The course is divided into two sections. During the first section, lectures are given to methods involved in high throughput screening of drug discovery followed by a laboratory work focusing on drug screening. The other section comprises bases on analysis and analytical techniques such as optical and atomic spectroscopy.
