Learning outcomes

The student can make x-ray diffraction methods and determine the crystal structure of a powder and thin film samples. The student can use Rietveld-refinement for powder samples and determine the texture and orientation of thin films. He/she will understand the reasons for peak widening and the main error sources. She/he can also determine the thickness of a thin films using x-ray reflectivity.

Contents

The course is divided in five parts:
1) Determination of the instrument function
2) Identification of a powder and Rietveld-refinement on that
3) Determination of the texture and orientation of thin films
4) Determination of the lattice parameters of the thin films
5) Determination of the thickness of a thin film with x-ray reflectivity
