Learning outcomes

You will learn methods for imaging nanostructures in biomedical and biomaterial research using transmission electron microscopy, scanning transmission electron microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Special emphasis is on principles of electron optics, image formation, planning of experiment, specimen preparation, image recording, interpretation, and reporting of the results.

Contents

1. Introduction to the program and tour of the electron microscopy laboratories.
2. Applications of electron microscopic techniques in analysis of nanostructure:
- Electronic information search for electron microscopies in Medline and World Wide Web
- Invention and developmental history of electron microscopy
3. Physical and technical principles of different electron microscopes and their use:
- Structure and function of transmission electron microscope (TEM)
- Structure and function of Scanning electron microscope (SEM)
- Structure and function of Scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM)
- Structure and function of High-voltage electron microscope (HVEM)
4. Operation of transmission (TEM) and scanning (SEM) electron microscopes
- Transmission electron microscope
- Scanning electron microscope
5. Image processing and interpretation. Occupational safety:
- Image recording and publication
- Image interpretation
- Occupational safety in laboratory work
6. Specimen preparation:
- Specimen preparation for TEM
- Specimen preparation for SEM
7. Optional extra day for topics according to the participants’ wishes
