Learning outcomes

The student knows the theory of liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry and the practical factors related to their use. The student is able to describe the most common LC-MS methods used and knows where and how these methods can be applied. The student knows how to perform an LC-MS-analysis.

Contents

The course gives good basic information about the liquid chromatography (LC) and mass spectrometry (MS) and especially about the hyphenated techniques (LC-MS). The course introduces the instruments, eluents and columns most commonly used in the liquid chromatography. Furthermore, the sample preparation and chromatographic performance are discussed. The main emphasis of this course is on the mass spectrometry, where the different ionization techniques and mass analyzers are presented and the tandem mass spectrometry explored. The practical examples and case studies create an overview of the suitability of LC-MS methods for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of different-type analytes. The course includes a laboratory work where LC-MS analyses are performed utilizing ultra-high performance liquid chromatographs combined with electrospray ionization triple quadrupole and orbitrap mass spectrometers.
