Learning outcomes

In nucleic acid chemistry, protolytic equilibria, conformations, tautomerism and coordination chemistry of nucleosides and nucleotides, structure and reactivity of nucleic acids, mechanisms of catalytic nucleic acids, synthesis of nucleosides, nucleotides and oligonucleotides, their structural analogs and conjugates useful in chemotherapy, and alternative strategies of targeting and delivery of therapeutic nucleotides and oligonucleotides. In peptide chemistry, solid supported methods for preparation of peptides and their conjugates, and their assembly to proteins, role of chemistry in development of methods useful in proteomics. In carbohydrate chemistry, protecting group strategies and functionalization of monosaccharides, synthetic strategies of oligosaccharides and glycopeptides, chemical basis protein carbohydrate interactions and glycoclusters as research tools and chemotherapeutics.

Contents

The course is aimed at elucidating the role of synthetic and mechanistic chemistry of biomolecules and biopolymers, their modified analogs and conjugates as research tool for cell biology and as a chemical basis of understanding of biological phenomena at the level of individual bond making and breaking processes and interatomic interactions. Main attention is paid to chemistry and therapeutic applications of nucleic acids, proteins and carbohydrates.
