Learning outcomes

The course aims at teaching the student how to detect the presence of compounds with high protein affinity or high oxidative activity from any given plant sample by rapid small-scale tests. At the same time the student learns how results of more simplified methods can guide the sample analysis by more sophisticated methods such as UPLC-DAD-MS/MS. The ultimate goal is to learn to rapidly screen plant species and organs to find specific compound classes and compounds with certain bioactivities and to further characterize and quantify these from the species or organs that were earlier screened positive.


The course starts by the collection and analysis of exotic plant samples from the glasshouses of the Botanical Garden of the University of Turku. Each student samples several species of his/her own priority and rapidly screens the samples for their protein binding and oxidative activities. The positive species will be further collected for quantitative studies and preserved by different techniques (e.g. liquid nitrogen, freeze-drying, oven-drying). Each species will be separately subjected to enzymatic and pH 10 oxidation and for removal of compounds with high protein affinity. All bioactive compound classes and individual compounds will be revealed by quantitative polyphenol analysis with the MS/MS fingerprinting tools developed for UPLC-DAD-MS/MS.

Active participation in the practicals held in the Botanical Garden and the Department of Chemistry are compulsory. Supervised practicals are accompanied by more independent analysis of plant samples and results interpretation, followed by joint meetings with PowerPoint presentations to reveal the main results. Literature survey on the known chemical composition of the chosen bioactive plant species is included in the written final report. No exam.
