Learning outcomes

The course is intended to provide an introduction to soft materials chemistry focusing on functional mainly organic and hybrid materials. The student will have a detailed understanding of these materials physical working principle, their synthesis and preparation and their application.


Introduction to chemical and electrochemical methods of synthesis of electronically conducting polymers. The chemical and physical properties of these compounds and their characterization with different techniques will be discussed. Fullerenes and their chemistry, their characterization in liquid and solid phase. Polymerization of fullerenes and fullerene-metal polymers. Synthesis, purification and characterization of carbon nanotubes and graphene oxide will be presented. Characterization of different allotropic forms of carbon and some inorganic 2D materials will be presented. A brief introduction to different techniques for nanostructuring of conducting polymers, fullerenes and carbon nanotube materials is made. Examples of applications of the different materials in optical devices (light emitting diodes, organic solar cells, smart windows etc), transistors, sensors, medical applications are presented.
